Cast A Thought

Outdoor fishing for mental wellbeing

A breath of fresh air for Uttlesford residents, Cast A Thought offers fishing as an outlet for local families and young people with SEND, integrating fishing with outdoor learning, cooking and first aid, providing a holistic approach to mental health support.

Partnered with Active Essex since 2023, Cast A Thought regularly engages in the Essex ActivAte HAF programme, and has successfully introduced children to new skill sets and activities in a safe and tranquil setting.

Fishing is my calm place. It’s just relaxing for me and all my disabilities just ease out. It helps me so much.

Cast A Thought also secured Find Your Active funding to expand their outreach into a community offer. ‘Get Fishing’ sessions provide young people, both beginners and experienced anglers, with an opportunity to participate in fishing activities with all equipment, bait, and licenses covered.

The primary goal is to harness the therapeutic power of fishing to promote mental health and wellbeing across all age groups. The regular sessions and monthly meetups facilitate learning and independent growth in a unique sport.

Fishing isn’t just about learning how to fish, it’s about decision making, problem solving, communication and patience. Especially with autistic and ADHD children, because they are just focusing on the one float, there is no visual distractions around them.
