Strengthening Communities

Aythorpe Roding Village Hall

A space to connect the community

Situated along the Ride London route, the village hall was ideally positioned to connect the community during the country’s biggest cycling event. The trustees aspired to make it not only a pit stop for riders negotiating the streets of London and Essex but also a fantastic opportunity to bring the community together to connect and celebrate the event.

The hall needed renovations, such as updating the old electrical system and inadequate lighting. The plans involved installing modern, energy-efficient LED lights, adding wall sockets with USB ports in the main area, and upgrading emergency lighting above fire exits.

Second Objective:
to enhance community engagement and promote healthier lifestyles

With the support of LMF Places and Spaces funding, they aimed to create an inviting environment for various physical activities and community groups. This initiative seeks to enhance community engagement, promote healthier lifestyles, and offer a versatile space where residents of all ages can come together to stay active and connected.

Before the Places and Spaces Fund became available, the trustees of the village hall had already reached out to the community to find ways to make the space more inviting. Residents expressed a desire for more opportunities to be active with their neighbours and families without leaving the village, and to strengthen their connections with each other. Groups that had previously used the space for their services were also consulted on how the space could be improved and what would encourage them to return.

The modernisation of the hall has not only allowed us to reintroduce activities but has also enabled us to operate more efficiently, which overall will help us have a long-lasting place within the village. Additionally, it has made the hall a much more attractive space for hirers, thereby supporting our community's wellbeing and, of course, the local economy in Uttlesford.

As a result of the community consultation and funding, the trustees successfully revitalised the space. With the help of the hub team, they connected with Batts Table Tennis Club Harlow, which provided a coach to restart the club. The club is now regularly attended by members, and the table and equipment are available for families to hire on weekends, promoting family activities.

The trustees also aspire to establish an indoor bowls club and seated chair exercise classes, both of which were highlighted by the community during the consultation.

Social events have seen increased attendance, as improvements in lighting, heating, and Wi-Fi have enhanced the overall experience, helping more people feel connected and creating a sense of belonging within the village.
