Impulse Leisure

People Culture Skills

With communities at their core, Impulse Leisure provide extensive leisure provision, alongside GP Referrals, carers coffee mornings, knit and chat, and run education sessions with the emergency services.

Managing Director Karl, attended the launch of Active Essex’s People, Culture, Skills Strategy, which led to him completing diagnostic testing, an organisation deep dive and received business guidance over the past 2 years to identify areas to develop the people, culture and the skills within the Impulse Leisure workforce.

As an organisation before the Covid-19 pandemic, Impulse Leisure was a strong business with growing membership numbers. But due to the impact of a number of lockdowns and consequently income pressure, they started back up in ‘survival mode’, with a clear goal to keep the business open and people in their jobs. As a result, their personality become fractured and through the diagnostic testing, recognised that they had lost their focus on the people that work within the organisation.

We fully support the work of CIMSPA (Chartered Institute of the Management of Physical Activity), to ensure people can see a pathway from school, to coaching, to management, right through to our leadership team. We’ve had our heads down for so long. Having external support come into our business and to shine a light on what we’ve achieved to even keep our organisation going has been great.
Karl Hayes, Managing Director

Working with specialist consultants Sporting People, and Active Essex they have been able to design their approach to developing a strategy, and ensuring they bring their suppliers, partners and employees on the journey with them.

In turn, this open and vulnerable process as allowed Impulse Leisure to provide clarity on where they are heading as an organisation and outline the clear pathways for everyone to see a future within and through the organisation.

The work we continue to do with Active Essex and the support we receive, demonstrates their commitment to us. This kind of thing could be deemed the responsibility of the organisation, but they’ve recognised that to keep great people in our sector they need to help organisations to support their people effectively. The impact on the whole business has been probably twice as, if not more, impactful as what we expected it to be, because of those little hidden benefits that start to creep in by having fresh eyes and fresh perspectives.
