Strengthening Communities

Over 50s Black Men Forum

Table Tennis league for the community

A table tennis league was set up to engage black men over the age of 50 in activity as there was a need for this community to become healthier and active. It was important for the community to have their say, and Table Tennis proved to be a popular choice, as many had grown up with this activity due to its low cost and social element.

A need was identified for the over 50’s community to become healthier and to do more active sports, members originally asked the organisation to organise physical activity events such as walking and football. Table Tennis was highlighted as a good option due to its low impact on the body.

Many members of the community have underlying health conditions such as diabetes, prostate cancer and high blood pressure and are considered to not be in good health. Being able to take part in these activities has helped provide the men with a platform to improve their fitness.

Prime Objective:
to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of attendees
AE Second
Second Objective:
to improve the access to physical activity in the community

Funding awarded by Active Essex enabled the Forum to attract older residents to attend and increase their movement. Table Tennis has no dress code and there was no fee charged for those that attended, meaning that anyone from this community could take part with ease.

Participants have seen their level of fitness improve significantly. Sessions take place twice a week, and naturally this has grown competitive, in turn helping increase heart-rates among the group. Many friendships have been reformed as a result of the project, which has consequently had a really positive impact on the wider community.

Positively, with 2 former African National Champions in Chelmsford and Grays, they have inspired others to join and participate. Since inception other localities have observed the impact made by the project for the community, and have requested that the organisation branch out to Kent, Dagenham and Thamesmead. This has occurred through their YouTube channel and also when participants have visited others, increasing awareness through word of mouth.

For me this club couldn’t have come at a better time. I had been thinking about extra activities to improve my fitness and was engaging in lunch time tennis at work so to now have this club every Tuesday is a godsend. I have enjoyed the physical activity that has done wonders for my wellbeing, as well as the social aspect, getting to meet like-minded people.
