DP World Relationship
Building relationships to support young people
DP World, a multinational logistics company with a significant presence in Thurrock through the London Gateway logistics hub, commits funding through its Freeport Community Investment Fund to support local community projects, social infrastructure, and skills training in the Thames Estuary region.
The partnership with DP World, Active Essex and Active Essex Foundation (AEF) was funded to deliver and support a range of projects introducing young people to new forms of physical activity, as well as mentoring and life skills sessions.

Active Essex and the Active Essex Foundation (AEF) formed a strategic partnership with DP World, supported by investment funding. The partnership was initiated by the Port of London Authority due to aligned organisational outcomes and goals.
Projects funded engaged young people who otherwise wouldn’t take part in physical activity and aimed to support them in avoiding criminal behaviour. This included boxing and mentoring, multi-sports sessions, and more.
The strategic partnership led to the creation of the Thurrock Sport and Life Skills Funding pot, which resulted in the following impact so far:
Active Essex worked hard to understand common outcomes and identify areas where the partnership would benefit both parties. They shared processes and learning with DP World, as well as created a wider support offer, providing further funding opportunities, training, and network sharing.
The partnership has been held for just over a year and continues to strengthen. Future DP World investment will be explored alongside Sport England Thurrock place partnership funding.
It is great to have the support and commitment of this type of funding to the Sport and Youth Crime Prevention Project. Statistics show an increase in the level of serious violence in Thurrock, and young people have expressed their concern about feeling safe in their community. This investment has enabled Active Essex Foundation, in partnership with locally trusted organizations, to provide positive opportunities for young people. We hope to continue to explore our strategic partnership work with DP in the years to come.Active Essex Foundation Chair, Bob McClintock
