Acorn Villages
Pilates and Relaxation
To address the lack of mobility that can take place for adults that live with learning difficulties, Acorn Villages set up Pilates and Relaxation Techniques project to increase mobility in a controlled environment, that was adaptable for each person’s disability.
Led by a physiotherapist trained in pilates with specific experience in supporting adults with learning disabilities, the activities took place onsite, and when possible, outside to provide fresh air and a change of scenery. Participants ranged from 18-60 years old and were male and female.

Pilates was a good activity that helped increase mobility and improved the health of participants and is also appropriate for adults with learning disabilities to do at a pace that suits them. Due to its low intensity, Pilates can be beneficial for people with learning difficulties because it can be adapted to suit a range of abilities, and improve balance, strength, flexibility, and posture.
Acorn Villages had noticed that residents with disabilities often face barriers to physical activity, so being able to provide movement that was appropriate for their needs, was rewarding.
Due to the success of the programme, following funding from Active Essex Find Your Active small grants programme, Acorn Villages were able to highlight the impact that it had had on participants, and therefore support them to be able to secure further funding to allow the initiative to continue. In turn, showcasing the importance of evaluation that helps provide evidence of impact.
