Singing for Lung Health
Breathing New Life into Respiratory Wellness
Initiated by Rainbow Services in Harlow, the Singing for Lung Health project aims to improve lung health and fitness through enjoyable singing exercises and gentle movements, for individuals living with a respiratory condition.
With funding from Active Essex and guidance from the Asthma and Lung UK team, Rainbow Services were able to source an appropriate singing coach with relevant knowledge and experience, to help individuals manage their symptoms through physical warm-ups, vocal exercises and group singing. The sessions are designed to be enjoyable and stimulating, in a supportive and sociable environment.
Over 1.2 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with the obstructive lung condition COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and many more remain undiagnosed. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals with poor lung health have been cautiously re-entering the community, seeking ways to improve their health, and safely interact with others. Singing for lung health not only helps participants to manage their breathlessness, improve their quality of life and overall mood, but also allows them to take part in daily tasks, as well as meaningful social and physical activity.
Everyone’s baseline for movement and physical activity varies, so it was important to assess this first to determine the appropriate support. Additionally, it was essential to recognise that interventions like singing and movement can serve as stepping stones in becoming more physically active. Singing for Lung Health has helped many people understand that exercise doesn’t have to be traditional to be beneficial. It acknowledges that everyone has different starting points and can make progress, experiencing many health benefits along the way.
Long-term members have reported very positive results, aside from respiratory improvements. Social connections have formed throughout the group and the facilitator has successfully helped several members obtain blue badges, secured increased benefits and provided support in various other ways.
