Colchester Bootcamp
Power of sport to strengthen communities
Thanks to a partnership with local organisations, including mental health charities like The Samaritans and Mind, Colchester Bootcamp was created to promote both physical and mental wellbeing by combining exercise with community support. Recognising the positive impact of movement on mental health, the bootcamp provides an inclusive space where people of all fitness levels can connect, grow, and feel empowered.
Receiving significant support, the Colchester Bootcamp project is a multifaceted approach to raising participation levels in physical activities among Colchester residents. The project tackles the inequalities that prevent local people from accessing fitness opportunities, aiming to improve the diversity of participation and promote overall well-being.
Despite the numerous health benefits of regular exercise, many individuals remain inactive. The bootcamp aims to change this by offering engaging and accessible fitness sessions.

Exercise, like the activities offered at Colchester Bootcamp, is known to have numerous health benefits. It helps increase muscle function, cardiovascular endurance, and overall mental wellbeing. The outdoor setting of the bootcamp allows participants to benefit from nature, reducing stress and improving mood.
30-40 new participants attended the bootcamps, with 80% of those that attended previously classified as inactive (doing less than 30 minutes of exercise per week). By the end of the project, 80% of these individuals were consistently meeting or exceeding recommended activity levels.
The introduction of a fitness boxing class has been a standout addition, attracting a diverse group of participants who enjoy its engaging and high-energy format. This class has been particularly effective in building confidence, reducing stress, and fostering a sense of accomplishment. Overall, the project has created a strong sense of community, helping individuals connect, stay motivated, and support each other. Many participants have reported significant improvements in their fitness levels, mental well-being, and social connections.
One major improvement was the addition of outdoor lighting, which allowed for safe evening sessions during darker months, ensuring participants could stay active year-round. The introduction of the fitness boxing class, made possible by purchasing boxing gloves with funding, provided a fun and dynamic way to engage participants, improve strength, and support mental wellbeing. These changes were driven by participant feedback and a commitment to making the sessions more accessible, diverse, and impactful for the community.
The project has brought about significant changes for both participants and the wider community. Many participants have reported improved physical fitness, greater confidence, and enhanced mental wellbeing because of consistent involvement in the sessions. For some, this project marked their first step towards regular exercise, and they now feel more empowered to prioritise their health. A major impact has been the creation of a stronger sense of community, with participants often highlighting the supportive environment and connections made, which have reduced feelings of isolation and created a network of encouragement.
Overall, the project has had a lasting positive impact, inspiring participants and strengthening community ties, highlighting the transformative impact of Colchester Bootcamp on both individual participants and the wider community.
