Changing Lives Community Gym

Making physical activity accessible for all

Established in September 2024, CLCS Gym opened to address the issue of gym accessibility, aiming to create a space where the entire community could achieve their fitness goals in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment, at an affordable cost.

CLCS Gym offers free memberships to individuals from low-income families, refugees, and young carers, with low-cost memberships for students too. The gym is located centrally near bus routes and the town centre, making it easily accessible for all residents.

CLCS Gym has created strong partnerships with local charities and other organisations, including Beacon House, Community 360, Essex Young Carers, RAMA, Wethersfield Base, and Provision 360. The gym also collaborates with GPs and the NHS, with a personal trainer completing a GP Exercise Referral course to receive NHS referrals. Additionally, a partnership has been established with the global brand ON, which has provided high-quality clothing for staff.

Funding for the gym has been provided by Colchester Catalyst, Colchester Council, Active Essex, and the National Lottery. Active Essex has supported key initiatives such as Wellbeing Wednesdays and BoxSmart, as well as funding for disability equipment and specialised classes.

This initiative has been truly transformative. The impact of the gym on people's lives is evident—it has become a vital part of their daily routine, and they consistently leave feeling happier and healthier. Many of our members would typically be unable to afford a traditional gym membership or may feel reluctant to invest in one, making this space invaluable to them.

Challenges

  • Limited space and gym equipment - leading to the need to use additional space in the community hub
  • Managing the behaviour of vulnerable members - incidents of alcohol use and aggression towards staff

CLCS Gym has successfully removed financial barriers to fitness, ensuring everyone has access to health and wellness resources. The gym has become a cornerstone of the community, fostering social cohesion and mutual understanding.

The project continues to grow, with plans to expand services and support more individuals in achieving their fitness goals.

Through our classes and community projects, we engage a diverse range of individuals, including those who may not have initially considered joining a gym. However, once they experience the positive atmosphere and support, they develop a genuine enthusiasm for it and are eager to return
