Microscooters Partnership

Educating young people on scooter safety

Piloted through the summer Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme, followed by a number of school workshops, Microscooters partnered with Active Essex to integrate scoot safe activity sessions. The initiative taught children essential scooter safety skills while promoting physical activity and fun during the holidays.

The implementation of scoot classes aimed to promote safe scooting practices for both new and experienced riders. This initiative was designed to encourage active travel, boost children's confidence, and increase the number of children scootering.

Second objective:
Promote physical activity and fun

The sessions taught young people the basics of scooting, including how to stand on the scooter, push, turn, and slow down. They also learnt basic tricks, quickly advancing with guidance and practice. Intermediate sessions also covered different styles of jumping and tricks, ensuring children develop a range of skills. Three packs of scooter and safety equipment were funded to clubs in eight districts, enabling comprehensive and safe training for all participants.

Due to the success of piloting the scoot sessions during the summer HAF programme, further sessions were delivered during October half term across six districts, and local schools.

The scooters greatly enhanced our October half term programme across all three sites. They provided new experiences for children, both indoors and outdoors, and served as a reward for those needing encouragement or a break from their group.

Key Learnings

It's important to take time to reflect and understand the learnings from work undertaken, to focus on ways to improve in the future.

Falls

Safety equiptment

Lack of additional equipment such as knee pads and wrist guards reduced safety during scootering

Cycle

Efficiency

Running sessions with 8 scooters is challenging since carousels need 10 children for efficiency

Children

Young people

Young people (8+), mastering basics, can be challenged with advanced techniques and tricks

The partnership between Microscooters and Active Essex successfully promoted physical activity, safety awareness, and community engagement among children in Essex. By providing essential resources and incentives, the initiative empowered children to lead healthier, more active lives, contributing to the overall wellbeing of the community.

The scooter activity enables us to offer an even more diverse and enriching experience for the children attending our club and gives children from the most disadvantaged backgrounds access to activities that they've not taken part in before.
