Essex Year of Numbers
Using physical activity to help improve children and young people's maths skills
The Essex Year of Numbers is a countywide campaign designed to inspire a love of learning, with a particular focus on numeracy. This initiative aims to provide a year filled with exciting learning opportunities, fun events, and engaging activities targeted at children. The campaign's goal is to enhance children's math skills and foster a positive attitude towards numeracy.
In collaboration with Teach Active, a nationally recognized leader in active learning, Essex Year of Numbers seeks to give every child's math skills a significant boost. John Smedley and his team at Teach Active have partnered with Active Essex to deliver a comprehensive programme that includes various resources and activities designed to make learning math more enjoyable and effective.

Active Essex received funding from Essex County Council to support the Essex Year of Numbers initiative. This funding facilitated the partnership with Teach Active, enabling school teachers to access a range of resources to deliver Active Maths Festivals. These festivals are specifically designed for students who have not previously engaged with traditional lesson delivery or who find math challenging. The festivals provide an interactive and dynamic approach to learning math, making it more accessible and enjoyable for all students.
Additionally, the funding has allowed the Active Essex Children and Young Person Strategic team to host the Count with Courtney Challenges. These challenges, featuring activities from the Teach Active website, are led by former Move With Us ambassador and GBR gymnast Courtney Tulloch. Through a series of videos posted to the Active Essex YouTube channel, Courtney challenges schools to participate in various math-related activities as part of the Essex Year of Numbers celebration. This initiative not only promotes numeracy but also encourages physical activity and engagement among students.
Essex Year of Numbers is all about making math fun and active for kids. By combining physical activity with learning, we're helping children improve their math skills and develop a love for learning. With the support of Teach Active and Essex County Council, we're creating a brighter future for our young learners.Tom Weller, Assistant Relationship Manager
