Girls fitness sessions

The project funded by the Opening Schools Facilities programme aims to improve participation in these girls only sessions where the girls can build their confidence in a supportive and empowering environment.

This initiative focuses on building confidence among girls by offering a variety of gym equipment and activities tailored to their needs. The sessions are designed to help girls develop their fitness levels, build self-esteem, and encourage a sense of achievement through friendly competitions and personal goals.

Thanks to the funding, the Opening Schools Facilities programme at the school has increased participation in physical activity amongst female students and has helped create and inclusive environment that is not age restrictive.

I can’t afford a gym membership, and many have a minimum age of 16 so it is good that this is free and not age restrictive. We have a nice, fun group here! I also like that you don't have to sign up for a membership at gym. I like that it is a girls-only session as I am self-conscious with boys present.
Participant

The project has revealed the importance of providing age-appropriate and inclusive fitness opportunities, with friendly competitions being particularly effective in motivating the girls and fostering a sense of pride. Moving forward, the focus will be on maintaining the high participation rates, continuing to support the girls in their fitness journeys, and exploring additional activities that can further enhance their experience.

This is a great space for students to come and use up their energy, it gets the kids off of the playground that might be otherwise getting in trouble. Our record table has worked really well with a girls and boys record for each year group, and it is relational to their body weight rather than just a set weight
